About Haworthia cymbiformis f. variegata

Haworthia cymbiformis f. variegata, sometimes called the Variegated Cathedral Window Haworthia, is a small, rosette-forming succulent valued for its translucent, jewel-like appearance. It is a variegated form of the species native to the rocky, well-drained soils of South Africa. The plant grows as a compact, loose rosette of thick, fleshy, boat-shaped leaves that curve inward and taper to a point. The base color is a bright lime green, streaked and patterned with cream to pale yellow variegation, and no two rosettes are exactly alike. The leaf tips feature translucent “windows” that allow light to pass through for photosynthesis, giving the foliage a glowing quality. It typically reaches only 5 to 10 cm in both height and width, making it an excellent choice for small pots, windowsills, terrariums, and desks. Mature plants may send up slender spikes of small white flowers in spring or summer. It is a slow grower that gradually produces offsets to form a small cluster over time.

How to care for Haworthia cymbiformis f. variegata

Sun and Location: This Haworthia prefers bright, indirect light or partial shade. It tolerates lower indoor light better than many succulents, which makes it a good beginner plant, but for the best variegation and compact growth, provide a brightly lit position out of direct sun. Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves, while too little light can cause stretching or loss of color. A spot behind glass or an east-facing window is often suitable. Protect from frost.

Soil and Pot: Use a gritty, fast-draining succulent or cactus mix amended with perlite or pumice. The plant is prone to rot in wet, heavy soil, so excellent drainage is essential. Choose a pot with drainage holes and avoid letting it sit in standing water.

Watering: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, then water thoroughly and let excess drain away. This Haworthia stores water in its fleshy leaves and is sensitive to overwatering, particularly in winter when growth slows. A reasonable approach is to water only when the mix has dried substantially, which may be every two to three weeks depending on light, temperature, and pot size. When in doubt, wait—it tolerates dryness far better than soggy roots.

Propagating: Propagate by separating offsets (pups) from the mother rosette when repotting. Allow separated offsets to callous briefly, then plant them in fresh, gritty mix and water sparingly until they establish. Leaf cuttings are possible but generally less reliable for this species. The plant can also be grown from seed, though this is slower.
