How to care for Crassula Ovata Crosby’s Compact / Dwarf Jade Plant
Sun/Temperature: The Crassula Ovata Crosby’s Compact thrives in well-lit areas but can tolerate lower light conditions. Compared to other succulent plants, Crassula Ovata Crosby's Compact requires more sunlight to maintain its compact form. It can be kept outdoors during warm seasons. If the temperature exceeds 95 °F in summer, providing some shade cloth is advisable. Jade plants are not cold-tolerant, and their leaves and stems can become soft and melt in low temperatures. During winter, when the temperature drops below 45 °F, it is recommended to move the plant indoors to prevent frost damage. Click here to learn how to take care of succulents in summer.
Soil/Pot: Use well-draining succulent soil formulated explicitly for succulents or cactus. To ensure proper drainage, the ideal mix includes potting soil, perlite, and coarse sand. A planter pot with drainage holes is crucial to prevent waterlogging and root rot. Jade plants can grow tall and eventually develop into jade plant tree. It is recommended to use a slightly larger pot, preferably made of ceramic or terracotta, to prevent the jade plant from toppling over due to its size.
Watering: Crassula Ovata Crosby’s Compact is a succulent with water-storing leaves, making it drought-tolerant. Observing the leaves of your jade plant can provide clues about its watering needs. When the plant is adequately underwater, the leaves will appear plump, fleshy, and glossy. The leaves may shrink or become slightly wrinkled as the plant becomes thirsty. To ensures thorough watering and allow the roots to absorb moisture, slowly pour water onto the soil around the base of the plant until it starts draining from the bottom of the pot. Avoid overwatering, as it can cause succulent root rot and other issues. Click here to check if your succulent underwatered or overwaterd.
Pruning: Prune Crassula Ovata Crosby’s Compact to maintain its desired bonsai shape and size. Remove any leggy or overgrown branches to encourage bushier growth. Additionally, prune off dead or yellowing leaves to keep the succulent plant looking tidy. Click here to learn how to make jade plant trunks thicker.
Propagation: When it comes to succulent propagation, the two most common methods are leaf propagation and stem propagation. While leaf propagation is suitable for most echeveria succulents, Crassula Ovata Crosby's Compact has a higher success rate and faster propagation through stem cuttings. Take a healthy cutting and allow it to dry for a few days until a callus forms. Plant the cutting in potting soil and keep it lightly moist until new roots develop. Alternatively, leaves can be propagated by laying them on top of the soil until new plantlets emerge. Click here to learn how to propagate jade plant in water.
